Homeschoolers, teachers, and poetry lovers will appreciate Susan Thomsen’s Poetry Foundation article, “Home Appreciation,” about how homeschoolers are using poetry in their studies. The article includes recommended titles as well as suggestions for how to develop and nurture children’s interest in poetry. It also includes a few quotes from yours truly.

Homeschoolers and Poetry
September 10, 2008New York Times Article about Muslims Homeschooling in California
August 22, 2008I was remiss in not linking to “Many Muslims Turn to Homeschooling” by Neil MacFarquhar in the March 26, 2008 issue of the NYT when it first ran. The article’s still interesting, and this is a community I’d certainly like to learn more about.

August 18, 2008Check out the article on homeschooling in the August 1 issue of SLJ. My friend Cathy Henderson from the Greece Public Library is mentioned. Woo to Cathy! Her homeschooling programs have been innovative and popular.
Helping Homeschoolers in the Library in the D&C
January 20, 2008They ran a blurb about Helping Homeschoolers in the Library today in our local newspaper. I’m not sure how long the link will stay live.
Research on Library Services to Homeschoolers
May 1, 2007McCarthy, Amy, and Deborah Lines Andersen. “Homeschoolers at the Public Library: Are Library Services and Policies Keeping Pace?” JLAMS 3, no. 1: 5-44.
You can find this article here (pdf document, scroll to page 5 to find article). This is an excellent article: well thought-out, well-researched, informative. It’s a must-read for librarians interested in learning more [...]
What Are Homeschoolers Reading?
March 13, 2007The Edge of the Forest, THE online monthly journal devoted to literature for children and teens, runs a regular column called “Kid Picks.” This month, Sherry Early from Semicolon interviews a group of homeschoolers about what they’ve been reading. Sherry’s a homeschooler herself, so the post is interesting on two counts.

“When You Are in a Subculture of a Subculture, You Often Get Painted as the Freak Family”
November 25, 2006Here’s an article on unschooling from The New York Times.
It’s a weird piece to come out of the Times, more like filler than actual news. Personally, I’ve never met an unschooled child who didn’t strike me as bright, curious, and interesting, and I hate to see such a superficial article from a major news outlet [...]
Most Libraries Are Only a Decade Behind
May 20, 2006“The increasing number of home schoolers and the money they are willing to spend has created an opportunity for bookstores. Often, it seems, simply recognizing and courting the market can make a difference – the books are there. Customer databases and lists of helpful titles that are already in stock can add up to sales. [...]
Research Articles?
May 16, 2006Fisher, Jeffrey C., and Don A. Wicks. “Bookmobile Services to Homeschoolers in Ohio.” Bookmobiles and Outreach Services 7, no. 1: 7-28.
There are many problems endemic in research and writing by and about librarians and homeschoolers, and this article is a perfect example. (Sadly, it’s not freely available online, so you’ll have to use your mad [...]
